I’m gonna say it

I like what we’ve done in these last few days. It’s not what I think any of us wanted or expected, but given how the market played out, I think we’ve done pretty well for ourselves. We got starters at some key positions in S opposite Pitre with Ward, a plug and play RG upgrade in Shaq Mason for next to nothing (extension coming probably) , a really solid DT in Rankins, and a good change of pace receiver in Bobby Trees.

The rest of the moves are non-consequential depth pieces. Ridgeway will be a good rotational lineman. Winovich in the same vein. Andrew Beck is a good multi positional player at TE/FB and a great special teamer as well. Noah Brown good depth at WR. Boone may or may not crack the roster depending on what we do in the draft but if he’s on I think he’s a solid special teamer and capable spell back.

The only thing that concerns me is the lack of long term deals and not addressing LB, C. Not that I think any of these guys besides Shaq Mason really are worth a LTD (and Mason will likely get an extension), but it kind of breeds a cycle of continuing the 1-2 year contract trend if it’s all you ever do and I think that’s starting to show since that’s what we’ve done the last couple years. As for C and LB, they definitely need to be addressed and likely will in the draft but it would’ve been nice to have more aggressively entertained one of the free agents in this class at least, but I’m not mad about it.

Only thing that’s really left for us to do is fill in some more depth, trade Cooks, hopefully get Denzel Perryman, extend Tunsil, Howard and Mason, and cut Kirko, Eric Murray and Reeves-Maybin. After that it’s all in on the draft.

All in all, it’s not sexy but it’s better than what we’ve had and is consistent in what Caserio has always said. Build through the draft and supplement that in free agency focusing on 2 year windows.
