If you’re looking to get into a new job industry, be careful of predators.
I recently had the idea of trying to get into a new job industry.
I’ve been hitting indeed and linkedin hard and heavy. Imagine my delight when I get an interview opportunity. The first red flag was when I arrived for my interview and there was a lobby full of people also waiting to be interviewed. I struck up conversation with someone and asked if she was applying for the same thing and we were all there for the same reason. Fortunately, it wasn’t a surprise group interview, but rather a new person coming out and taking a person back for an interview every few minutes. All anyone at the office that day was doing was interviewing. Ok, weird. But I’m curious now. This place was specifically looking for people to “fundraise for charities” by doing “events” in front of Fortune 500 companies like Walmart. They really emphasized that they weren’t really looking for someone to do that long term, the ultimate goal was to be a “director of operations”, train others, and bring in six figures. Ok, I’m listening! At the end, I’m asked if I’m available for a second interview the next day to go over pay and benefits. A little weird, but ok. I show up and meet with a different person, who really just asks me weird things like what my hobbies are and goes through the ranks system. The pay is performance based, or you can take a “training pay” of $500/week until you break even. here is a photo of my notes that describe the pay structure.
Long story short, my gut felt off so I started doing some digging and found information on R/antiMLM about something called demon corp. Here is a great documentary about it. These places are essentially pyramid schemes without a product. Your time is the product. You will ultimately end up in a tent outside Walmart for 12 hours a day begging people to donate their hard earned money. I was lucky to find information on the particular individual and company that was trying to indoctrinate me here on Reddit. Another user sent me some of their training materials. I would be happy to share the name of the company, individuals running the scam, and any other details I’ve gathered in a private message. If I share too much information here they can have this post removed.
Be careful, friends. Trust your gut. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
