If the Texans decide to re-sign Diggs in 2025, would the cap hits from 2025-2028 still be dead money owed in 2025 or would they be able to spread that out in the 4 void years 2025-2028?

Let's say Diggs does well and both parties want to work out a deal. Could Texans spread the $16M left from the old contract over the 4 void years then? That $16M only becomes due in 2025 if he doesn't re-sign here right? Could this all be part of a sneaky agreement to help Texans increase this year's cap space, get Diggs paid and help each other out again next year with a fair contract deal? That would be some kind of 4d chess move. Diggs paying for the #1 seems like a sign that he wants to stay here beyond just 1 year. I guess a lot could change over the course of a season tho

Broken down:

Year Cap Hit Cash Paid Difference
2024 $5.876M $22.52M – $16.644M
2025 $4.161M $0 – $12.483M
2026 $4.161M $0 – $8.322M
2027 $4.161M $0 – $4.161M
2028 $4.161M $0 $0

If Diggs doesn't re-sign, it will be 16m cap hit because the void years go away (no longer under contract) and the cap for them gets crunched into the year

Year Cap Hit Cash Paid Difference
2024 $5.876M $22.52M – $16.644M
2025 $16.644M $0 $0
