IAH Airport Pickup

I'm picking up a friend from IAH next week and I'm stressing because I've heard bad things about that airport (I get anxious about driving in new situations when I don't know where I'm going and there's lots of traffic). Tried to look at Maps but I've heard there's been construction so I don't know if the street view is correct.

Flight is coming in from Mexico and scheduled to land around 8pm, I believe in terminal D. How long can I expect to wait in the pickup line so I can time my arrival as best as possible? Where do I pick up (as I've seen online that international arrivals go to terminal E for pick up, not sure how accurate that is)? Is signage clear to direct me where I need to go?

Or is there a better option than just usual pickup? I've heard having people take the shuttle to the rental car facility and meeting them there is usually easier. Suggestions are welcome!
