I want to adopt a cat, where from?

I googled it and there appears to be a few options for adoption including friends for life, SPCA, and others. I was curious if anyone has had a particularly positive or negative experience adopting from any local shelters? Ideally would like a relatively low adoption fee that covers at least vaccinations and hopefully spay/neutering since I’m still in grad school.
