I really like seeing all the bikers out these days, please be careful this is the most dangerous I’ve seen the roads.

So I bike everyday for my commute and got rid of my car about a year and a half ago. The last month is the most in danger I’ve felt on my usual routes. I think the lack of usual traffic has encouraged drivers to be a little more lax on speed limits, yielding, and coming to a full stop at stop signs. There has also been a huge uptick in delivery drivers, who because of the nature of their (important) jobs are on deadlines in areas and roads they may be unfamiliar with.

If you’re on a bike be very aware of cars behind you and roadways ahead that cars can pull out of. Get in the habit of avoiding potholes by going to the right if possible because you’ll be doing it a lot. BUY LIGHTS. Both front and back. If you’re not a daily rider you can get away with some reasonably cheap ones. Just make sure they can flash. Use the lights on their brightest flashing setting at sunrise/sunset. I usually go to a lower flashing setting for rear at night and full on on for front. Just remember being on a bike is dangerous, and that cars that don’t see you can be deadly.

Drivers, thank you to the people who give us plenty of room. If you don’t know, having a car fly by you on a bike is terrifying. Please give us as much space as you can, if you can’t give us at least 5 feet please wait. We know you’re behind us and it’s slowing you down but it maybe adds 10 seconds to your drive and saves us the risk of falling into your front tire and nobody wants that. If you fly by me dangerously on a backroad and then I catch up to you at the light it’s very awkward(happens all the time).

Thank y’all, have fun biking and you should keep doing it after we get through this. Biking bar crawls with a group of friends is my favorite thing in the world and I miss it.
