I am starting school at Houston community college soon. I have never visited downtown Houston on my own before. I am a 19y/o F is it safe for me to walk alone? What should I look out for?

Follow up question, I am still deciding if I should take public transportation or take my beat up car. If I do take my car is there any areas with safe and cheap parking not far from campus. (My program director recommend to find cheaper parking since on campus parking can get pricy)
