How to Look Unapproachable

I have taken the MetroRail red line from downtown to the med center at least once a day for the last two weeks and I have now twice been followed from the train by men who were passengers in the same car as me. I am a 6’ tall woman that is usually dressed casually in my scrubs and a backpack. I keep to myself and just browse Reddit while I ride.

The first time this happened, a man was hard staring at me, so I switched cars at the next stop, and he followed; then I moved locations within the car and he followed; then he got off at my stop and he followed behind me screaming “bitch”.

The second time (just now), a man was staring and I basically ignored him until I got off at my stop and he followed closely behind. When I noticed he was behind me, I stopped walking, changed directions and crossed the road; then he crossed the road after me and followed me all the way until the door my building, even standing at the window and staring in at me for several minutes.

What can I do to avoid catching the attention of people like this? Do you have any safety tips for me? Are there common safety mistakes you see new riders making?
