How new Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley is winning over C.J. Stroud. Personality over plays
Jonathan Alexander from the Chronicle interviewed Nick Caley, some excerpts below:
For C.J. Stroud, what excites him most about Nick Caley isn’t so much his offense.
Stroud said what excites him is who Caley is and what he represents. He said he often gets phone calls from Caley early in the morning. Sometimes it’s to talk about the Texans’ offense. Other times, it’s to check in or talk about life.
“I think, for me, I buy into people,” Stroud said. “I really don’t buy into systems. I kind of have that thing about life. It’s the people and the relationships that kind of take things and make it rocket ship to the stars. So, just him as a person, man, he has probably the most juice I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Their personalities contrast. Caley is all energy, all the time. It’s not hard to spot him on the field. Just look for the guy wearing his hat backwards. Stroud is a little more laid-back.
“I try to learn about people,” Caley told the Chronicle. “I think that’s the key in it all. And the energy, for me, I was born that way. That’s my DNA. I love football.”
Q: Obviously, the offensive line will be a huge factor in how you perform offensively, how are you approaching that?
A: First of all we have competition at every spot. It’s been good. And the way we’re approaching it, everything starts up front. Whether we’re talking about getting the run game going or pass protection. That’s how you gain control of the line of scrimmage. And it starts up front with those guys. They’ve done a really good job throughout the spring. We don’t have pads on, so the true test (is) when we come to training camp, when we see the physicality. We see how much the fundamentals and techniques have developed from Phase Two to the time we get into training camp. … But the competition has been really good. Got a lot of guys getting a lot of reps. And the more competition we have at every position is a good thing.
Q: What is your hope for C.J. Stroud as you try to build something that enhances his strengths as a quarterback?
A: Be the best he can be every single day. Keep stacking days. Keep growing within the system, and he’s done a really good job attacking that, from where we started to where we are now. Just continue to build every single day and learn from the reps. The reps we’re in and the reps we’re not in, and continue to refine that. I mean, we’re far from where we need to be, and that’s how spring is. I’m excited to have him come back to camp, and it’ll be fun to see the continued growth that he’s already had moving into July and August.
