Event organizers say Houston Restaurant Weeks’s extension will help local restaurants recover from Hurricane Beryl and this summer’s derecho

For Houston diners scrambling to make it to every restaurant on their Houston Restaurant Weeks checklist before month’s end, here’s some good news: The dining deals have been extended.

For the third time in Houston Restaurant Weeks’s 21-year history, the fan-favorite dining event and largest annual fundraiser for Houston Food Bank will extend its run by nearly a month through September 30, according to a release. The major dining extravaganza was originally scheduled to end on Labor Day, which falls on Monday, September 2. However, the Cleverly Stone Foundation, which organized the event, has extended the duration of its deals to help Houston-area restaurants recover from the physical and financial damage they endured due to the derecho in May and Hurricane Beryl in July.

During this impromptu encore, the organization will adjust how it directs the garnered funds: Going forward, the Houston Food Bank will receive $1 for every multi-course, prix-fixe meal sold through September, instead of the previous $7, which increases the profits for Houston restaurants. Meal prices, however, will stay the same: $25 for lunch, and $39 or $55 for dinner.

Cleverly Stone Foundation president Katie Stone said in a statement that many restaurant owners requested an extension in hopes of giving their establishments and staff a chance to recoup. Many local chefs, including Jacques Fox of Artisans, say Houston Restaurant Weeks have also helped bring in new crowds, particularly during lunch, which has been slower since the height of the COVID pandemic.

The extension is a rare occurrence, which further demonstrates the severity of the storms’ lingering impact on restaurants as they strive to bring the same degree of hospitality as they offered before the events this summer. The Cleverly foundation similarly extended Houston Restaurant Weeks following Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and 2020 during the height of the COVID pandemic.
