Houston Landing abruptly parts with Editor-in-Chief and Investigative Reporter
Yesterday, Houston Landing fired its Editor-in-Chief Mizanur Rahman and reporter Alex Stuckey, just six months since the full launch of the publication.
The only explanation given so far by CEO Peter Bhatia:
When we launched on Feb. 1, 2023, Houston Landing dedicated itself to accountability reporting and reflecting the region's diversity — to improving the lives of Houstonians one story at a time.
We have come a long way since then, and with growth comes change. This week, we announced that we are parting ways with our founding editor in chief, Mizanur Rahman. We are thankful to Mizanur for putting so much of himself into this organization and ensuring we have everything we need to serve the people of Houston in powerful ways.
This seems to be quite surprising inside the organization, as well. Alex Stuckey went to Twitter last night, saying they were fired as part of what Bhatia called a "reset" but was never given a conclusive answer as to why she was being let go.
Pretty shocking moves for this publication that has been releasing really effective journalism under the guidance of Rahman.
Also reminds me of when Texas Tribune (another non-profit organization) laid off reporters last year and twisted itself in knots to not acknowledge or explain to the public why.
