Houston is underrated!
I am just back from my trip to the US. I spent the most time in the city of Houston (and also some suburbs around it). This is largely due to the fact that I have family relatives/there so this city was my base.
From the moment I landed at the airport, seeing all the diversity in people was heartwarming. To put into context, I am South Asian and have been living in Europe for the past years, and I have sometimes struggled with the feeling of 'looking'/'feeling' like an outsider, but that really went away in Houston 🙂
I liked the open roads, massive highways, and big houses! It was a very interesting city layout, and just going through the highways and seeing the multiple downtown skylines was a unique sight to behold. How spread out the city is was really interesting to see for me as a tourist (Thank God I had people to drive me around!)
The spirit of the city was also really vibrant! (Note: I also went to Dallas and Houston seemed more 'alive' to me.)
Plus, the food was amazing! I had some great authentic food from my country and also ventured into some Mexican food as well (Torchy's Tacos and Bodega's). Plus so many food (and also shopping) options!
For a city of its scale, size, and racial diversity, I am kinda sad that it doesn't pop up in the 'Major/Global cities of the world' list many people have in mind. In fact, a fair amount of people don't even know about Houston outside the US. And only think of NYC, Chicago, and LA as the true major cities. I really feel Houston deserves a spot up there!
Only one thing that was kinda off putting was it 'felt' a bit unsafe at times (but maybe that's just me).
But overall, a great experience!
Stay classy, Houston!
