Houston is getting expensive! A family of four needs to make 220k in Houston to have a comfortable/ upper middle-class life. Is my math wrong? What are your personal experiences?

Hey all I (21 F) am in finance, and I love playing with numbers! I was looking at what it would take to have an upper middle-class life in Houston and wanted to share my math! Thought you all could chime in.

See breakdown below:

  • Rent- 4 BR/ 3 BA- $2500. If interest rates and home prices drop this number could be lower.
  • Groceries- $1000
  • Bills- 2 Cars (1100), Electricity and Internet (300), Insurance (300)- $1700
  • Entertainment/ Clothes etc- $1500
  • Day Care- Assuming 2 Kids- $2000
  • Vacation Funds- $1000 To be able to take nice vacays, this number could be less and go towards savings too!
  • Savings and Investment Post 401k- $2000

That is almost 12k a month- 144k post tax or adjust for taxes and good 401k contributions (assume 65%)- 220k pre tax.

Anyways I just thought to share! What are your thoughts!
