Houston Athletes Make History at SUMO World Championships in Tokyo

In a historical moment for the United States women's sumo team, history was made in Tokyo when they claimed their first-ever Sumo World Championships medals. Among the remarkable athletes representing the U.S., two hail from right here in Houston.

On the podium, part of the team was Madison Guinn, who was elated with their performance and emphasized the team's historic achievement. Guinn, who has been practicing sumo for just a short while, trains at the WAR training center in Houston, which primarily focuses on MMA. Despite the odds, she showcased exceptional talent and determination.

Houston's very own Sumo Dojo, known as Shogeki Sumo Dojo, is incredibly proud to have had a youth competitor represent our city on the global stage. Zeus, a promising athlete with a background in high school wrestling, embarked on her sumo journey through a unique encounter. A year ago, she attended the Asia Society Texas Center's Night Market event in Houston, where Shogeki Sumo Dojo hosted a demonstration. With a daring spirit, Zeus volunteered to step into the sumo ring for the very first time.

Zeus faced formidable opponents in the youth category. While she didn't secure a medal this time, her unwavering determination and tenacity shone through. Her matches were challenging, but Zeus displayed remarkable skill and resilience.

Their achievements not only bring honor to our city but also inspire us all to reach new heights. Congratulations to these remarkable athletes for their historic accomplishments and next time, we're aiming for the GOLD!
