HOT TAKE: We should NOT want the Blue Jays to win
The past few days on this sub have been a bunch of gloating over the Jays making it to the World Series and hoping they go all the way. And sure, part of that is just because it’s the Mariners losing and the Dodgers being up next, which is fine and all, but I’m going to be a contrarian and say… the Jays winning it all would be bad for the Astros.
Before you downvote me into oblivion, hear me out.
A few weeks ago, back when we were on the verge of elimination, I made a post showcasing how, even though our postseason streak was about to end, we still achieved so much in the last decade. In fact, I went as far as to say that we had established ourselves as the most successful expansion team of all time, in large part due to our postseason success.
That will all go away if the Jays win
To clarify, the Jays winning will give them their third total championship. No other expansion team has more than two; in addition to us and them, the Mets, Royals, and Marlins also have two each. However, we break the tie by having three additional pennants, with only the Mets having as much. We also have more postseason appearances than the Mets. But if the Jays get that third championship, then THEY will be known as the greatest expansion team, by virtue of this one series.
The way I see it, we have two options. Do we want the Jays to lose to a team that (blegh) is going to dominate anyways even after this season ends? Or do we want the Jays to win, and lose the legendary status that we only just got after our period of dominance? I don’t know about you, but I’d rather have the former over the latter.
(Side Note 1: Don’t think that I want the Dodgers to win. As you’ll see above, I chose my words carefully to avoid saying that I want the Dodgers to win, because f**k the Dodgers. The only benefit of them winning is, if they end up becoming a true dynasty as a result of this, everyone’s hatred of them will grow exponentially. However, if the price we have to pay for them winning is us remaining at the top, I’ll take that.).
(Side Note 2: A lot of people are only cheering because of Springer, which I totally get and agree with. However, I don’t agree with the notion that Springer winning a second ring will be his redemption. Instead, this entire SEASON has been his redemption. Just look at how people have been applauding him ever since he stuck the dagger in the Mariners season. The home run is making the rounds everywhere. He now has the highest cWPA in baseball history which hasn’t gone unnoticed by the media. I’ve seen people even saying he’s now a borderline HOF case, which is super wholesome considering he was always the odd one out of the Core Four hitters from 2017. No matter what happens, he’s going to be celebrated by the Jays for eternity for finally living up to his contract and breaking their recent postseason woes in the process. I couldn’t be happier for him, but like how the Jays acknowledge that simply claiming the pennant was redemption after over three decades of struggle, Springer’s season has been his own redemption after both the sign stealing and leaving for Toronto. A World Series isn’t a completion of that, it would be a cherry on top.).
