Homeowners around retention ponds

Specifically those that live in masterplanned communities:

We are considering moving onto a lot with a pond behind it. While it looks nice, we plan on avoiding it if there are major issues. The retention pond is currently under construction but we believe it’ll have a fountain at least based on the others that are already complete.

What is your experience living around these ponds (pros/cons)?

Are there a lot of mosquitos or bad smells?

Does HOA handle all of the cleaning if required?
