Highs and Lows of the Dusty Era?

Hey fellow Astros fans. With the recent news of Dusty potentially calling it quits, figured now would be as good a time to kick off the offseason by reminiscing over the good times and the bad times we've had with our skipper. While recent trends have certainly not been in his favor (myself included among his critics), there are definitely some noteworthy occasions where we've backed the guy. I'll start off by listing a few highs/lows that came immediately to mind, but I'm definitely curious from the rest of the community of moments that you'll remember most when thinking back on this part of our Golden Era.

Highs

  1. 2022 WS Win (Game 6) – probably the most obvious one. Regardless of how you feel about the guy, it was pretty awesome to see our dugout mob Dusty immediately after the victory and chant his name. He seems like a good guy that the clubhouse rallied behind last year and it was unanimous that we wanted to get him that ring.
  2. 2020 7/28/20 vs. Dodgers "Just get on the mound MFer" – in the immediate aftermath of the shitstorm that came our way post-scandal, I'm sure we all expected our guys to get plunked early and often in 2020. This is a very specific moment for me where Dusty had our backs and even wanted the smoke with our favorite pitcher Joe Kelly. Definitely one I'll remember and proved that he wanted to protect our guys.

Lows

  1. Favoritism – to me, it would have been great if he rode off into the sunset after #1 above. Unfortunately, it seems this year was worse than before when it came to playing his guys. Every year, there seemed to be a few. Whether it was Yimi Garcia, Brooks Raley, Maldy, Meyers, Julks (list can go on)… I just wished that younger guys could have gotten more opportunities during the regular season and we could have ridden momentum and developed them. I was hoping this trend mentioned from other teams where Dusty ran his course in the past wouldn't make its way to us, but ultimately it sucks that to me it did.
  2. "I know more than you" – I couldn't help but get this vibe whenever we had questions over decisions, again, probably this year more than years past so perhaps recency bias on my part here. But I can't recall our past managers just having zero interest in being accountable. Even last night he mentioned he'd received unjust criticism due to who knows what. Yes he's been in the game for a long time, and yes he probably does know more than 99% of us, but it was certainly frustrating to see (in my eyes) a lack of willingness to adapt especially when things weren't going our way.

At the end of the day, we're still spoiled from this great run. I legitimately thank Dusty for his contributions and leading this team when he took over. To me, he was the right guy at the right time who overstayed for a year too long. Looking forward to our next clubhouse leader.

Curious for your takes!
