Help needed – recommendations on how to deal with electricity provider fraud
About an hour ago, I got a weird email that I luckily noticed. My electric provider sent it saying "We're sad to see you go", etc.
I logged in and then called my provider. They said another provider put in an order to have it switched to them. I did not such thing. I am the only owner and only resident of my house.
My correct energy provider says they can't see who took over. They initiated an investigation, but said it will take 2 weeks.
I called Centerpoint and they were not only completely unhelpful, but laughed on the call. No, I'm not joking, they actually audibly laughed on the call. They can't tell me who the new provider is either "for security reasons". I asked if there is any kind of customer service escalation or fraud investigation department, and they said no.
I am stuck now and no idea what to do. So I guess at some point in the next couple of weeks some random energy provider is going to send me a bill in the mail? This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of.
I fully understand that I am ignorant of this kind of issue and there may be something I missed. But I definitely didn't put in a request to change. I also can't believe there is no customer service escalation path at Centerpoint.
Anyone got any advice for me? (preferably helpful actionable advice).
