Have Other Hispanics Here (non-Mexican) Experienced This In Interviews
On more than one occasion in my adult life I have been asked illegal questions from Hispanic employers.
I recently attended an interview with a guy through a Teams or Zoom interview where a preferred requirement was to speak Spanish, which I do. During the call the guy stated more than once that I was "breaking off" but I told him everything was fine. He decided to move the interview to his cell phone so that we can continue. He then asked how good my Spanish was and I said that it was magnificent and that I have been able to use it on a daily basis. When the interview resumed, he asked me where I was from and I replied that I grew up in the southwest part of Houston. He asked how I learned Spanish and I replied that as a local resident of the area I attended schools in the area where I was able to learn the language through bilingual coursework. He asked where my parents were from to which I replied that my accent is neutral but I have experience using Spanish in a professional setting and I have been able to serve many Spanish speakers without problems. He pushed again and I mentioned the region where my family was from. Only then did he stop and not say anything and moved on to something else. To some it might seem like an innocent question but because of my background I know they are seeing me as "the other kind" or just looking down on me and I do not think it's fair because I was not even born in those countries. The job was primarily data entry.
