Harris County Tax Office selling vehicle registration info

So I transferred my out of state title to TX a few weeks ago..not even a week with went by and I am getting bombarded with car warranty spam in my mailbox, and also spam calls , all to do with my vehicle.

I know its Harris County because the clerk misspelled my name (with my ID in front of her!), an edited title was requested but all these spam mail are addressing me with the exact misspelled name on the initial temp title I was given.

I am just surprised as I thought Texas had tighter privacy laws…I am in the housing market right now and I did notice for example that home sale prices are hidden from zillow et al….so why lax the laws when it comes to vehicle registrations?

Also anyway to opt out of this ?

EDIT: I have been educated by fellow redditors that while someone is indeed selling the info, its not the county but the state. Given that the state covers everything related to vehicles everywhere else I have been- lines get blurry for new residents in Texas (as in County Tax office for registration instead of state MVD)
