Harris County Assessment – Protest
I purchased a house in 2018 with a detached garage w/living area above. I decided to do it the right way (which was probably a mistake) and pulled permits to upgrade my electrical and and plumbing. Before the remodel, HCAD listed my home as a Residential, Single-Family with extra features – Frame Detached Garage w/living area above. However, after completing the remodel (without adding square footage or framing new rooms), my home was reclassified as a Residential, Single-Family with 2 building structures, leading to an increase in my appraisal on SF and taxes. I've noticed similar houses where the living area above the garage isn't factored into the appraisal, resulting in no extra taxes being paid. Is this something I can protest with a property tax consultant?
