Goodbye, Houston

I’m moving out of state today to be with my wonderful partner, and I will miss this city. As much as I’m excited to be moving to a state with functional infrastructure and slightly less insane government, I am sad to go.

Houston has always been a misunderstood city as long as I’ve been here. The fourth largest city in the country but also one of the easiest for everyone to s**t on. I loved it when they would, because it proved what I always felt living here – Houston is for Houstonians. Others may not get us, but I’ve always felt such an understanding between people from here. We all look out for each other. We are generous with each other. We help each other.

I’m moving to a place where many people dream of living. It’s beautiful, the beach is jaw dropping and less than half an hour away from my new place. But it’s not my somewhat stinky, slightly dirty, slightly janky, wonderful city. I can’t explain properly, but maybe other Houstonians will get what I mean. I’ve traveled a lot, and no other place feels exactly like home the way Houston does.

This post was a bit more of a ramble than I intended initially. I just couldn’t leave after almost exactly 29 years of living here without giving you guys a proper goodbye. I’m going to miss everything, good and bad. Please keep voting to make this place better and better just like it deserves.
