Good mortgage brokers in Greater Houston?

I'm having a hard time finding a true "mortgage broker" as I understand them to be. But maybe I'm misunderstanding. My realtor recommended me to someone who in the end was really mainly pitching their own branded loans (from the lending company they work for) rather than gathering different quotes from lenders around the area.

Is my notion of a mortgage broker flawed? Anyone have any names they'd recommend? With rates/prices these high, I'm obviously looking to shave off as much as I can from the APR and closing costs.
