Given current roster and payroll, who do you want the Astros to sign?
I've seen a lot of grumbling here and in other Astros communities about the lack of action for the team so far this offseason. But the team began the offseason returning almost the entirety of a team that lost in Game 7 of the ALCS and, before any signings occurred, the highest committed 2024 payroll in baseball. Our major losses are Michael Brantley (57 plate appearances in 2023) and Hector Neris. We currently have 22 rostered major league players for our 25 man roster.
Even after other teams' spending sprees, we have the sixth highest committed payroll according to Fangraphs: https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/breakdowns/payroll
So what are the major holes in the roster we're supposed to be opening the checkbook for? I could see adding an OF/DH spot along the lines of Brantley, but who's that supposed to be? Bellinger? Jorge Soler? JD Martinez? We want to overpay those guys?
Are we supposed to be adding a major SP arm? After Framber and JV, we theoretically have Javier, Urquidy, Brown, and France (and Bielak? idk I like him) plus McCullers and Garcia coming back. Adding another major SP arm means cutting bait on at least one if not more of those guys.
I get the frustration after the way our season ended. And sure, it'd be cool if Jim Crane spent like the Yankees or the Mets or the Dodgers. But in the world we actually live in, with the players that are actually, realistically available, who are we supposed to be signing to bolster the team that actually exists?
