Getting hosed by roofing companies in Richmond Tx

I have a 3,000 sqft 1 story home that’s due for a roof replacement. I took the cards of a few guys who came during the storm saying they were doing repairs nearby. Decided to call them last week and all of them came with a quote of $24k, $25k and $28k. 1 is a fairly well known company that’s been around.

I found the crew that did the roof replacement next to my home (Malarkey also installed for $26k cash without insurance ) and asked what they’d charge me to install if I was to buy the Materials directly (Owen’s Corning Duration 45 Squares for $6,000). They quoted me $4,500 to $5,000 for labor. They would warranty their work and they are certified installers for Marlkey & OC. I have to pay for some warranty they mentioned and pay for pulling a roof permit.

Has anyone hired a crew to do their own roof work? Or is everyone out here paying cash / insurance?
