Getting a dog from a breeder vs. Shelter

Hey friends,

I've never owned a pet so I'm tying to do some research before making the commitment. What are the advantages of getting a dog from a breeder vs a shelter? I don't know much about the different breeds. My only requirements are one that's great for a family with young kids and does not require huge amounts of exercise because we don't have a backyard or a pool.
