Gas tankless vs heat pump water heater in Houston attic

I'm looking to replace my old gas tank water heater in the attic with either a gas tankless or an electric heat pump water heater. From what I've researched the efficiency and operating costs highly depends on climate and regional gas/electricity prices.

I'm leaning toward the heat pump water heater since it gets so hot here and it would be nice to eventually be able to disconnect gas service from the house (still have gas furnace and stove). Having a tank of water in the attic isn't ideal. I would need to upgrade the gas line or run new electric either way. Not a heavy user or large family so I'm not concerned about running out of hot water.

Does anyone have any experience with this decision?
