Free Agency losses and Potential Adds
Using Spotrac as my tool to show who is a free agent, we have these players set for free agency
| Player | Position |
|---|---|
| Maldonado | C |
| Brantley | OF |
| Madris | OF/1B |
| Neris | RP |
| Stanek | RP |
| Maton | RP |
Our 26 man on the opening day would look something like with zero Free Agent adds
| # | Position Player | Position | Pitcher | Starter/Reliever | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Diaz | C | Verlander | SP | |
| 2 | Abreu | 1B | Valdez | SP | |
| 3 | Altuve | 2B | Javier | SP | |
| 4 | Bregman | 3B | Brown | SP | |
| 5 | Peña | SS | Urquidy | SP | |
| 6 | McCormick | LF | France | SP | |
| 7 | Dubon | CF | Whitley | SP/RP | |
| 8 | Tucker | RF | Martinez | RP | |
| 9 | Yordan | DH | Sousa | RP | |
| 10 | Meyers | OF (B) | Montero | SU/RP | |
| 11 | Salazar | C (B) | Graveman | SU/RP | |
| 12 | Kessinger | UTIL (B) | Abreu | SU | |
| 13 | Singleton | 1B / DH (B) | Pressly | CP |
Whitley will be on the roster if he is uninjured to start the season. He is out of options and we aren't going to drag him along for all these years to give up at the end.
Now, to round out our 40 man currently we have
| Player | Position |
|---|---|
| Bielak | SP |
| Blanco | SP/RP |
| Dubin | SP/RP |
| Gage | RP |
| Mushinski | RP |
| Kuhnel | RP |
| Paredes | RP |
| Hensley | UTIL |
| Julks | OF/3B (allegedly) |
That's 5 options available for our 40 man through free agency or internal promotion.
We also have 3 guys on the 60 day IL right now who will eventually take 3 spots (or get DFA'd) when they come back
| Player | Position |
|---|---|
| McCullers | SP(?) |
| Garcia | SP |
| Ortega | RP |
That leaves us 3-7 spots if you assume Singleton, Ortega, Paredes, and Kuhnel are expendable
We realistically need a defense first backup Catcher that could kind of mentor Diaz through his first season as a full time starter. We definitely need some bullpen help, and while we may be able to get away without adding SP, I think we need at least 1 proven pitcher.
Money is obviously a question, but I've seen estimates vary depending on what source you look at for our "cap hit" BUT if Crane is trying to keep us a championship contender, we almost have to spend through the first bracket this season, meaning 256.9999 MM payroll.
I'm going to go with the $235MM dollar that Rome tweeted about as a reference point.
That leaves us about $22MM of wiggle room for external options to fill out our roster spots.
Here are some guys that we could grab multiples of in that price range (estimates by Spotrac)
| Player | Position | Estimated AAV (MM) |
|---|---|---|
| Paxton | SP | $9.3 |
| Brad Keller | SP | $4 |
| Severino | SP | $11.7 |
| Giolitto | SP | $11.9 |
| Lorenzen | SP | $9.2 |
| Austin Hedges | C | $4.3 |
| Victor Caratini | C | $3.1 |
| Phil Maton | RP | $4 |
| Matt Moore | RP | $3.5 |
| Luis Garcia (not ours) | RP | $2.2 |
| Brad Hand | RP | No Value Listed ($2-4?) |
Those are our biggest areas of need, and Neris could still opt in, but I doubt he will unfortunately
Finally here are a few names that I'd personally like to see the team push for that may be out of our price range, or require some trades to free up room
| Montgomery | SP | $18.5 |
|---|---|---|
| Dave Roberson | RP/SU | Unlisted ($5-8?) |
| Lordes Gurriel | OF | $14.5 |
| Isaih Kiner Falefa | RP | $6 |
IKF is just a joke on here, unless….
There are also a few prospects not on the 40 man that I didn't list here, but this list is long enough, and there are guys on this sub better at projecting prospects than I am, so I will leave potential up and coming prospects up to them to talk about who could make the opening day roster and help fill out our 40 man roster.
