For all the doomers and gloomers out there
While it's never exciting to begin the season 4-11, I have been seeing a lot of desperation posting in here lately. I think it is important to remind ourselves of what the facts actually are.
1) Our team OPS is .761, which is good for 8th in the majors. We are 5th in BA and 14th in runs scored. So while the offense has been decent, it's the pitching that has been atrocious.
2) We have, without exaggeration, an entire starting rotation in the injured list. Framber got shutdown for a month. JV returning soon. Urquidy, Garcia, McCullers all back at some point.
3) Our bullpen is giving up runs at an unsustainable clip, especially on the back end. Abreu, Pressly, and Hader have accounted for 16 earned runs in 18.1 innings. That is an ERA of nearly 8. Even fi all of them have horrible years this will trend downward.
4) The Astros always knew the beginning of the year was gonna be a grind. We opened with the Yankees and Blue Jays at home. Then 1 day off. Then a gauntlet of Rangers, Royals (who always seem to have our number), Rangers, Braves with no rest days in between. Coming out of this above .500 would have been a success.
5) The schedule will get better in the 2nd half of April: we face the Nationals, Cubs, Rockies, and Guardians with rest days between each series. A great opportunity to get a winning streak going.
This is your friendly reminder to not doom and gloom so much. It's baseball. It's April. We are still favorites to win the division, believe it or not. I have faith this team will straighten the ship soon.
