First time Houston summer – Suggestions for AC in room

I share an apartment with a couple of ppl. Even at night, the room temperature is like 78F. I would like it close to 72F. They don't want to crank the AC, since there is also an old person in the apartment who feels very cold. I don't want to be combative, so I was looking to buy an AC only for my room. Since Houston is already humid, will an evaporative cooler work? I have attached a link below
