First backpacking trip recommendations

Headed out west in a few months and just want to get a weekend or two of backpacking under my belt so I can test-drive my gear and see how to tinker. Obviously the weather will be much different in a few months out West than in Texas right now BUT I need some recommendations for 1 or 2 night backpacking trips !!
