Fine arts magnet middle schools: please give me the sauce

So I have a talented kid on my hands, and she’s determined to go to an art school for middle school. I’m all for it, as I’ve heard arts-based education can pay big dividends in many ways later in life, no matter what direction a person chooses to take later.

“School choice” is part of what keeps us in Houston, as I feel like the opportunities to pursue specialized education in fine arts or STEM might not be available in smaller or more conservative districts. Am I on track here? Have any of you had experience with the magnet system and felt like it was “worth it,” if that meant driving across town, or do any of you feel in retrospect like it’s better in the burbs? I hate the idea living in the suburbs on principle, but not enough not to do it if it’s better for my kids.

Did any of you have especially good/bad experiences you’d like to share? We’re looking at Pershing and Meyerland as our top two right now, and I feel confident she can produce a portfolio that will be competitive. Can anyone provide any personal anecdotes about the audition process? Whether these schools are good?
