Filing homestead exemption

We filed the exemption in January 2022 for our townhouse which we moved into in October 2021. We bought a house and moved into it in May 2022. Should we file an exemption now for the house or wait until January 2023 to file it. I know the law changed, but I’m having a hard time understanding the change. The prior owner of the house we purchased did have a homestead exemption (in case that makes a difference as I know it used to). TIA
