Fellow San Antonio/South Texas transplants: what are your go-to Tex Mex spots in Houston?

I’ve lived in Houston for 7 years now, but I grew up in San Antonio. My wife is from the RGV. In short, we have strong opinions about Tex Mex and Mexican food.

Houston hands down blows SA out of the water when it comes the local restaurant scene—except when it comes to Tex-Mex. Don’t get me wrong, Houston definitely has some good Tex Mex, but it’s much more hit or miss than SA. For example, El Tiempo is widely loved, or at least recommended here. In SA, it’d be very middle of the pack, people would think the tortillas were below average, and folks would absolutely balk at paying $14 for a one cheese enchilada plate. Personally, I think it’s decent but not great.

Other places I generally like are La Guadalupana, Teotihuacan, Tacos La Bala (specifically for tacos, gorditas, quesadillas), and there’s this random little place on Memorial called Sunrise Taquito that, I think, has the best breakfast tacos in town.

So, for the folks in here who grew up in south Texas, what are your favorite places in Houston? Where do you go when you need an enchilada plate, chile relleno, chorizo and egg tacos, botana, tacos de bistec or lengua?

Side note: it’s constantly surprising how many places here genuinely seem to not have a bean and cheese taco as a default option on the menu! Last weekend, I stopped in a random place and ordered “a chorizo and egg, a potato and egg, and bean and cheese.” The lady said “bean and cheese, like in the taco?” I said yes. Clearly we had a miscommunication because I got home, they had just added beans and cheese to the two other tacos I’d ordered. They were actually really good that way, but it was kind of hilarious because in SA my order for three different tacos would have been perfectly clear.
