Feedback on staying in the medical center area

I am visiting Houston in a few months and found a good deal at the Home 2 Suites on Alameda as I have a conference near there. My brother is an anxious person and a bit of a snob. He says that's a bad area and the hotel probably charges by the hour.

It has good reviews and is next to a bunch of hospitals so I'm pretty sure my brother is just being a nut. Thoughts from folks around there?
