Favorite Trees for a suburban home?

Currently researching trees to plant in my backyard (standard suburban home surrounded by a wood fence, neighbors right next door, etc), and am getting a bit overwhelmed with all the tree types.

Anyone have any trees they love for Houston backyards?

I love the look of a live oak, but know it's not a good backyard tree since it sprawls so much.

Ideal tree traits: provides shade, fall color would be a plus, not too sprawling to avoid neighbor yards, fast growing would be neat (but I've read that usually fast means weaker trees overall, and I don't want that)
