Favorite Houston Restaurants that existed in the 70’s-90’s
What are your favorite Houston area eateries and restaurants that existed in the 70’s-90’s and may or may not be gone now?
Here’s my starter list:
-
Ducho’s Steakhouse – off North Shepard. Simply steaks that were affordable and delicious.
-
Hyden’s Steakhouse – off North Freeway & Rayford Sawdust Rd. Salad bar, generous portions and fair prices.
-
Circus Restaurant – Westheimer near Fountain View Dr. This was a family friendly casual dining restaurant run by the Pappas group that had huge portions and very fair pricing (something that no longer applies to most Pappas restaurants)
-
Tokyo Gardens Restaurant- off Westheimer just inside Loop 610. Authentic high end Japanese hibachi style restaurant. It was 10X better than Benihana.
-
Albritton’s Cafeteria- on Waugh Dr. in the Heights. Simple cafeteria style comfort food that was quick, delicious and affordable.
-
Hickory Hollow – Heights Blvd near Washington Ave. This little gem had a small salad bar and the some of the best chicken fried steak served in Houston. *** Note: the original location off Fallbrook is still in operation but I haven’t dined there in decades.
-
Goodson’s Cafe – Tomball, TX. This restaurant which is still in operation serves delicious southern comfort food at reasonable prices.
-
Cleburne Cafeteria – Bissonnet & Edloe. This place (run by a Greek family) is literally an institution and consistently serves made from scratch delicious food in a pristine environment. I’ve never been disappointed with a meal there. Pricing is on the higher side – but you’re paying for the quality of the food. PS – you can often see notable local celebrities dining there.
