Facebook marketplace / Craigslist safety in Houston

I’m new to Houston, and moved here from a city with an extremely low crime rate where I would never ever have to make a post like this.

I’m trying to sell a dining room table. It’s a very nice table in very good condition with 6 chairs, expandable, including a hutch. I brought it to Houston because I couldn’t get it sold before my move but it’s a bit large for my new space. If I was to guess, maybe it’s worth $300 – $600.

Coworkers here in Houston are telling me stuff like make sure you make the sale in a public place and don’t invite anyone into your home. That’s not very helpful advice because it’s a dining room table… I can’t really bring it to a public place.

How concerned should I be about these types of warnings? I don’t want to dismiss them entirely because they come from people who have lived here for many years, but at the same time I don’t want to be a victim of crime inside my own home (I live alone). Should I just give up and accept that I’m stuck with this table? Any advice would be helpful.
