Experienced HISD science teacher feeling hopeless.

Title but details follow:

I don't want to give too much away, for fear of retaliation.

I've taught a certain science to high schoolers at HISD for more than 5 years.

I take a lot of pride in my profession, providing hands on demonstrations to every group of students for every lecture. Showing step by step sample calculations and having a system to require and incentivize student participation and meticulous note taking.

I'm experienced and my system works. Any time admins come in, long before the takeover, I'm at 100% student engagement despite class size or rigor.

This is the first year I am regretting being a teacher.

I absolutely cannot make the 4 minute MRS work for my science classes during lab days.

Under the new system, we are required to check for student understanding across the entire class every 4 minutes. I was already doing this on my own, but every 5-10 mins depending on the lesson.

So ok, I've managed to make this new 4 minute cfu interval work when Im introducing a new topic and when I'm showing how to solve problems.

But I absolutely cannot make this time interval and whole class check work during labs.

These experiments require students to work in groups and since not all groups are executing the same processes at the same time, whole class MRS is not good instruction.

During our labs, I'm not doing whole class check for understandings. I'm constantly walking around to each group, listening and facilitating and questioning. These TEA people are demanding I dumb down my instruction to put on a show of inappropriate check for understandings at inappropriate times.

I just can't do this 4 min MRS during labs because it's bad practice.

This all feels terrible.
