Education Question about living abroad and returning to Houston

Does anyone have experience of moving abroad with their kids (elementary aged, both in the SBISD gifted programs ) and returning to their home school and re-entering the program?

Does the student re-test or are they automatically in when they re-enroll? I know this is a small detail of living abroad logistics, but it’s nagging me right now. We are currently in Spring Branch Independent School District and are considering a 2-year stint in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Any insight is helpful if you had kids in similar gifted programs and how the transitions went both ways.
