Drivers license renewal question

Hi guys,

So my driver's license expires Feb 2021, I keep getting letters to renew because Real ID is in effect October 2020 – which is fine.

My question is, if I Renew now, does the next 8 months get added to my license? Since I still have it valid until Feb? Or does the 5 years begin from the date of renewal and they simply ignore that I have ~8 months until it expires?

I just ask because I want to minimize how often I have to go to DPS. If they don't take into consideration my remaining license term, then I'll just wait till the end of the year to renew.
