Don’t fall for the “Jury Duty”Scam that is going on in Houston.
Always remember that no legitimate company or government institution will ask you to pay using gift cards or “vouchers”. And NEVER talk to the police without an attorney present if you are being accused of a crime.
A friend of mine received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Houston constables office stating that they had missed Jury Duty and needed to pay a fine. Through social engineering they got them to purchase $5000 in moneypak gift cards that were to be used to pay their bond. Luckily the scammers did not receive the money, but they were very close.
The scammers were very convincing and sounded legit. My friend had never dealt with the police or court system so they were of course very scarred, which is what good social engineers do.
If any one calls and tells you that you cannot speak to anyone and to buy gift cards to pay for something, it is a scam.
