Do I have to fumigate my house? Dry wood termites
Hello!
TL/DR – looking for perspective on whether fumigation is absolutely necessary if I have dry wood termites. Does anyone have experience with this?
I recently learned that I have a dry wood termite infestation in my home. It is localized to a space in my attic/siding above the guest bathroom. I have had three companies come out to inspect.
The first company's tech left within 2 min after seeing the termite frass because they only treat subterranean termites. He's the one who told us our only option for dry wood termites is to tent the house. We then had two companies – Coastal Fumigators and Houston Fumigation come out to inspect and quote us for tenting the house. Neither company suggested alternate options (like spot treatment), but both specialize in fumigation/tenting so I wouldn't expect them to.
I saw this pest control company highly recommended in another thread about termites and their website says they don't recommend fumigation and that spot treatment is highly effective for dry wood termites. I'm wondering if we're being too hasty in jumping straight to tenting the home just because the first company's tech told us it's the only option for dry wood termites. I'm not worried about price necessarily, but the fumigation process just seems like a huge pain in the ass. I'm currently renting my home to two of my best friends and if I can spare them the drama I'd really love to.
