DeMeco Ryans + Texans + Trey Lance connection.
I posted a short and incoherent note about this last week and got blasted!!! 😄. So here is why I'm still singing this tune.
Starting off with DeMeco Ryans. He's a proven commodity. As a player (Defensive rookie of the year, core of the early Texans team) and as a coach( moved up the ranks in the 49er organization). He's a players' type of coach and the Texans have a young roster so that will bode well for both DeMeco and the young Texans. A little note: Football, personally, is like the financial market…there's ebbs and flows. As most teams want to hire an offensive minded coach is the current trend but if you look closely, that trend is starting to plateau. More coaches being hired (NYJ, LAC, DET*, TB) have been defensive minded coaches. The aforementioned teams went as far as their QB could take them, not because of their coaches. Finally, DeMeco Ryans has history with the Texans fans and the Houston community. This will be such a great win-win situation.
The Trey Lance situation Before I go deep into why I think this will be the best option for the Texans, let me take you guys back to Gary Kubiak's second year in Houston. He traded for a back-up QB (Matt Schaub) and built a system that matched the team.
Trey Lance, a 6'4", 230 LB QB that runs and passes very well. The type of offense that would fit both Trey Lance and the Texans is similar to what the 49ers run now or what Texans ran with Gary Kubiak, something that DeMeco Ryans knows all to well. The Play Action heavy offense. With a pass catching RB and dual (catching and blocking ) treat TEs. The Texans already have a steady RB with Damien Pierce. Getting TEs in the draft that fit the profile would make sense. So for the scary part!! What would the Texans give up for Trey Lance? A reasonable offer would be a 1st (12th) and a 2nd (next year) and a 3rd (this year). Then the Texans Trade down (2nd overall) and draft multiple offensive positions (OL, WR etc.)
Kill me softly if you will 😆
