Dark places to be outside past 10pm for free?

Looking for somewhere in the greater Houston area to go stargazing with my telescope.

Problem is – stars only come out at night and all the parks close at 10pm.

I bought a tent camping pass to Brazos Bend Park last time I went so I could be there past 10pm, but I ended up getting harassed by a park ranger for not being in my camping area by my tent. I explained that the tent area is covered by trees and makes it hard to use a telescope, which is why I was in the open parking area, but he didn't care so I just went home.

Where is a good place outdoors thats dark where you can exist at night and look at the stars? Everywhere in Houston proper is too bright to see much more than the moon.

What happens if you just hang out in a park past closing hours? I don't want to be arrested for trespassing.
