Cy-Fair needs trustees who put kids — not far-right extremism — first

The Houston Chronicle editorial board calls on voters to replace partisan extremists with boring, normal candidates in the race for the Cy Fair ISD board. Here's a key quote:

By 2021, the tide had shifted. Backed by far-right megadonor Steven Hotze and riding post-COVID backlash to anything labeled DEI, CRT or “woke,” she and allies Scott Henry and Lucas Scanlon ran as openly partisan culture warriors vowing to defend “historic American values,” oppose “Sharia law,” and uphold “Biblical marriage.” They won — and governed accordingly.

Since then, they’ve supported book bans; killed 13 chapters from state-approved textbooks that discussed climate change, vaccines and cultural diversity; and eliminated half of the district’s librarian positions. They slashed bus routes to save money, affecting 30,000 students and leading to much confusion among parents. It was only after several auto-pedestrian crashes involving students that the board partially reversed course.

Lately, the vibe has gotten uglier. Blasingame secretly recorded community members, only to turn around and accuse fellow trustees of lies and defamation. Her ally, Damon “Bam” Lenahan, threatened to release the tapes to pressure a resident to pull a Facebook post backing her opponent. The backlash prompted a Harris County GOP precinct chair to try to rescind her endorsement. But the party stuck with its slate: Radele Walker (Position 5), Blasingame (Position 6) and George Edwards (Position 7).
