Cool new restaurants?

I’m originally from the Houston area but have not lived there in almost 10 years and only visit about once or twice a year. Will be coming home over the winter break and was wondering what are some new cool spots to eat with friends (any area in the city)? Lunch or dinner.

Although I have lived overseas and am very open to all types of food, one of my friends is a bit picky. So probably Italian, Mexican, or American food is a safe bet. Interested in any suggestions you all may have! What have I been missing? Thank you!
