Commuting & Visiting Houston

Hi, I plan to visit Houston this summer for around 3 days, will stay in San Leon TX because my friend invites me to his house, but my friend won’t stick around with me, so kinda like solo travel and I won’t drive. I’m not really sure what I want to do but some of these itineraries should make me occupied I guess, NASA Space Center, Museum of Natural Science, Houston Zoo, Cockrell Butterfly, and Galveston Bay.

I’m a bit scared about safety when using public transport in Houston, I’m a first year international student. Can someone please explain the public transport safety there? I saw some old reddit post it might be not that scary, but I’m afraid it’s not relevant anymore. Some seniors also told me that Houston public transport isn’t safe in comparison with Austin public transport (I live in Austin), that’s why it makes me worry. I’ll try to combine with Uber/Lyft if I get back in the evening, but planning to save money by using bus as much as possible during the day. Really appreciate any suggestions.
