Commute – Energy Corridor to Downtown

Soon moving to Houston with my wife. We got an apartment at Energy Corridor, but the job is going to be in Downtown. How does the commute look like for a job with timing 9am to 3pm on a usual day? Is driving the best option- how does the toll roads work? Are those worth the spend? Are public buses/metros a reliable option? Seeking any thoughts..
