Coat/jacket alterations

Anyone have experience getting a canvas jacket slimmed down? I have a nice Sorel coat passed down by my father but he was substantially bigger in the belly area. Shoulder width/arm length are fine.

Many other posts about alterations reference dress shirt and suits. Unsure if the experience is the same across materials.
